No CommentsSouth Shore’s Only Superpipe Opens, Hannah Teter takes Silver, and the terrain parks look killer!

CONGRATS TO SIERRA RESORT’S HANNAH TETER who took Silver in the 2010 Winter Games Women’s Halfpipe last night! GO HANNAH! The only American woman to take two Olympic medals – gold and silver – in the last two winter games!

Celebrating a great first run
Riding the wave of excitement after the 2010 Winter Games Halfpipe events, skiers and snowboarders at Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort are enjoying the 400 foot long Superpipe – the only Superpipe on South Shore – which opened last weekend.
TransWorld SNOWboarding ranked Sierra Resort’s terrain parks and Superpipe in the nation’s Top 10 in the 2010 Resort Guide and it is easy to see why with 5 award-winning terrain parks that are super dialed in right now and tons of fun for jibbers.
Season passholders are commenting on local web sites and blogs that Sierra Resort’s terrain parks are the best they’ve seen in years – the features are creative and well maintained, the flow through the parks is fluid, and the vibe is fun and welcoming.
In addition, snow conditions at Sierra Resort are at their peak – with a 90 inch base and 317 inches of cumulative snowfall for the season, the Park Crew has had plenty of snow to translate their most innovative ideas into a freestyle reality. Some of those ideas include a propane tank turned on end, repurposed into a bonk. Another is an urban-inspired stair set with two 35-foot handrails for sliding.

No CommentsThe Sierra summer construction crew has been busy this off-season focusing their expertise in West Bowl. The Baja Grill & Corona Cantina are a favorite hang-out for guests on beautiful blue sky days – something about lounge chairs, beers with lime slices, and fish tacos. It’s like a little piece of Mexico right here in Tahoe.

No CommentsWarren Miller’s new film Dynasty showcases Huckleberry Canyon
Posted in: Skiing & Snowboarding, Winter Events
It’s been a big year for Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort in the movies. The latest release onto the big screen that was filmed in part here at the resort is Warren Miller’s new flick Dynasty.
Check out the trailer here:
Dynasty celebrates 60 years of Warren Miller Films. Narrated by Johnny Moseley and presented in HD, the film blends fresh footage and vintage Miller clips. Hard core Sierra lovers will recognize some of the rock and cliff drops as well as the wide open powder turns in Huckleberry Canyon. There are also plenty of shots from South Shore’s backcountry, including the easily-recognizable Mt. Tallac.
Check out the tour schedule to see the movie in its entirety at a location near you.
Dynasty caps off a pre-season of big screen entertainment that put Sierra-at-Tahoe in the spotlight. Already showing is TransWorld SNOWboarding’s Team Shoot Out, Standard Films Production Black Winter, TWS’s 20 Tricks: Volume 3, and TWS’s Get Real, The Movie.

1 CommentSnow lovers across Northern California are starting to turn their eyes toward the mountains, looking for those first signs of the winter to come. Here at Sierra Resort, we’ve already seen 9 inches of snow in October and are looking toward a wet November, if forecasts are to be believed. As I write this, flurries are starting up outside.
So what do we do until the season begins? Well, we Pray For Snow of course! And no one can Pray For Snow like Sierra can. If you’ve been to one of our Pray For Snow parties, you know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t, here’s the skinny:

No CommentsWith all this talk of El Niño making his prodigal return this winter, you may be wondering what does this mean for Tahoe? Big snow, wet snow, snow with pineapple flakes in it? I mean, what is El Niño after all?
Wonder no more . . . here’s your official guide to El Niño!
First, an introduction . . .
No seriously. Here is what it means.

No CommentsSierra-at-Tahoe Resort hosted two major film projects last spring for industry powerhouse TransWorld SNOWboarding magazine. They came to us for one simple reason: you just can’t beat Sierra’s parks.
When it comes to snowboarding, our park builders are among the best in the country. Sierra works with Snow Park Technologies to keep fresh freestyle features appearing all over the mountain – and these two projects highlight just how creative we can get when we put our minds to it.
The first project was the first ever TWS Team Shoot Out – a secret competition between four of the best teams in snowboarding hosted by four of the elite resorts in the west. The innovative project focused on creativity – challenging the teams “to produce the ultimate terrain park shoot and document it in video and photos to showcase the visual possibility in snowboarding.” – from TWS.

No CommentsThe 2010 Winter Games are just a few shorts months away and all four of Sierra Resort’s Elite Athletes have their eye on competing. Here’s an update on who’s who.
Hannah Teter is the reigning Women’s Halfpipe gold medalist. After competing nationwide last season, she’s looking to return to the top spot on the podium this winter. Hannah finished 2nd overall at the Winter DEW Tour, 1st at the US Snowboarding Grand Prix on February 1, 2009 and took home the bronze medal at the 2009 Winter X Games.
Hannah also bottles her family’s maple syrup, with all proceeds going to charity. Here’s a sweet vid of her shooting maple syrup on Jimmey Kimmel Live.

No CommentsSo each fall the big question is . . . .what’s new for the coming winter? This one is always interesting for Sierra. We know our guests are coming for the mountain – the raw, unpretentious, come-as-you-are, skiing and riding experience. So we don’t focus too much on building things newer and bigger each summer. Sure we keep our facilities in good shape and change things up when it’s time (360 Smokehouse BBQ at Grandview Lodge, Baja Grill in West Bowl), but let’s be honest. A new gondola to the peak, there ain’t. And nor do we want one.
So how do we make sure it stays about the skiing and riding? What are we doing this season that guests can wrap their mittens around? How are we going to Keep It Real this winter?

Call me a ski bum. It would be fair. I came to Tahoe right out of college (as a Religion major no less!), started waiting tables to make it through the winter and had every intention of heading home come summertime to get a real job. That was almost 10 years ago...
I moved to the Truckee - Tahoe area three years ago from the San Francisco Bay Area to escape city life and live in the place I had always loved to visit. When I used to visit the Tahoe area, it was always very hard to leave. It finally became time to make Tahoe "home"...
